55th International Film Festival of India Commences with a Spectacular Celebration of Young Filmmakers in Goa
The much-anticipated 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) began with grandeur along the scenic coastlines of Goa. With the theme “Young Filmmakers: The Future is Now,” the festival’s opening ceremony was a vibrant celebration of creativity, cinematic brilliance, and cultural diversity. Hosted by celebrated actors Abhishek Banerjee and Bhumi Pednekar, the event brought together film stalwarts, dignitaries, and passionate cinema enthusiasts.
The opening ceremony featured the screening of Michael Gracey’s Better Man, setting a high bar for the nine-day celebration of films. Honoring Indian cinematic icons, several stalwarts were felicitated for their contributions, including Subhash Ghai, Randeep Hooda, Boman Irani, and Rakul Preet Singh. Goa’s Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant, ceremonially inaugurated the festival in a traditional ritual of watering a coconut sapling.

Murugan, reinforced this sentiment, highlighting initiatives such as subsidies, the single-window system for film production, and anti-piracy measures to support Indian cinema.

Festival Director Shekhar Kapur reflected on the power of storytelling in bridging divides, calling film festivals crucial platforms for fostering dialogue. Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar added a philosophical dimension, describing the world as a storytelling stage where narratives connect lives and cultures.
Honoring Indian Cinema Legends
IFFI also paid tribute to the legacies of Raj Kapoor, Tapan Sinha, Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR), and Mohammed Rafi by unveiling commemorative stamps. The unveiling ceremony was graced by dignitaries such as I&B Secretary Sanjay Jaju, Nagarjuna (ANR’s son), and Firdaus Rafi (Mohammed Rafi’s daughter-in-law), celebrating the timeless contributions of these icons to Indian cinema.
Launch of Prasar Bharati’s WAVES OTT
Marking a milestone for India’s digital entertainment, Dr. Sawant launched Prasar Bharati’s WAVES OTT platform. Combining nostalgia and innovation, WAVES offers classic shows like Ramayan and Shaktimaan, alongside contemporary programming and student films, such as Roll No. 52 from Annapurna Film and Media Studio.

The festival embraces its theme by showcasing works from budding filmmakers through initiatives like Creative Minds of Tomorrow. Notable jury members, including Ashutosh Gowariker and Santosh Sivan, were introduced, reflecting IFFI’s commitment to nurturing fresh talent.
