“Vettaiyan” Smashes Pre-Release Records, Eyes Massive Box Office Numbers
Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan is already creating waves at the box office, surpassing the pre-booking collections of Indian 2 even before its release. With sky-high expectations, all eyes are on whether Vettaiyan can match or exceed the colossal figures of other upcoming biggies like Kalki 2898 AD, Salaar, Devara, or Leo.
Comparisons with Rajinikanth’s previous blockbusters are inevitable, especially after the phenomenal success of Jailer. Released in 2023, Jailer grossed an impressive Rs 56.6 crore domestically on its opening day. While Vettaiyan is set for a strong start, it remains to be seen if it can replicate or surpass Jailer‘s final worldwide tally of Rs 604.5 crore.
To put things in perspective, Rajinikanth’s earlier films have delivered mixed box office performances. Annaatthe (2021) registered a domestic first-day collection of Rs 34.70 crore, while Darbar (2020) and Petta (2019) garnered Rs 35.70 crore and Rs 22.50 crore, respectively. The 2018 sci-fi epic 2.0 remains the highest first-day earner in Rajini’s filmography with Rs 60.25 crore.
In terms of overall worldwide collections, 2.0 remains Rajinikanth’s biggest grosser, with Rs 723.30 crore, followed by Jailer at Rs 604.5 crore. Films like Darbar, Petta, and Annaatthe ended their theatrical runs with Rs 247.80 crore, Rs 232.92 crore, and Rs 172 crore, respectively.
With Vettaiyan already showing tremendous momentum in pre-release sales, the film is poised for a strong opening. Whether it can sustain its box office dominance and challenge Jailer or even 2.0‘s numbers remains to be seen, but the anticipation surrounding Rajinikanth’s latest venture is at an all-time high.
